POP's Games

Flag-Ship
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1957 (Electromechanical)
Design By: Wayne Neyens
Art By: Roy Parker
Owned by Pinball Outreach Project

Flag-Ship is the oldest game in POP's collection. It is a nice example of a "woodrail" game, referring to the wooden rails which line the sides of the game's playfield. It is currently undergoing restoration. Wayne Neyens and Roy Parker are two of the most recognizable names in pinball from the eletromechanical era. Wayne Neyens designed almost 180 games for Gottlieb between 1949 and 1976, and Roy Parker did art for almost 300 from 1932 to 1966.

Volley
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1976 (Electromechanical)
Designed By: Ed Krynski
Art By: Gordon Morrisson
On loan from the Portland Pinball Community

This is an example of an electromechanical pinball machine and the oldest game we have in our Portland location. These machines were made through the mid-70s and feature only analog electronics with no computer systems. They are instantly familiar with their use of analog scoring reels and chime units.

Stars
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 1978 (Solid State)
Design By: Steve Kirk
Art By: Jorge Obregon
Owned by Pinball Outreach Project

Stars is a rare example of a game with solid state electronics that still maintained the chime box of an electromechanical game rather than converting to digital sounds. While under-appreciated in his time, Steve Kirk has become a very popular designer among collectors due to playfields that were ahead of their time and relatively intricate rule sets.

Paragon
Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1978 (Solid State)
Designed By: Greg Kmiec
Art By: Paul Faris
On loan from the Portland Pinball Community

Paragon was the first "widebody" game made by Bally. It is 28.5 inches wide, as opposed to a standard pinball machine which is 22 inches. Bally made several other widebody games including Space Invaders and Embryon (also at POP.) Greg Kmiec was one of the most prolific designers of the 1970s and 1980s, designing over 30 games for Bally.

Harlem Globetrotters On Tour

Year: 1979 (Solid State)
Designed By: Greg Kmiec
Art By: Greg Freres

This was the second game done by Greg Freres, one of the most famous artists in all of pinball. He has worked on over 50 games and continues to be active in the industry today, most recently on the Game Of Thrones pinball machine for Stern Pinball.

Magic
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 1979 (Solid State)
Designed By: Mike Kubin
Art By: Bob Timm

Stern Pinball was originally run by Sam Stern and made pinball machines from 1977 and 1984. In 1999 Sam's son Gary bought Sega Pinball and revived the name Stern Pinball for this new company. They continue to make games today and are currently the largest pinball manufacturer in the world.

Embryon
Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1980 (Solid State)
Design By: Claude Fernandez
Art By: Tony Ramunni
On loan from the Portland Pinball Community

Embryon was the fifth and last widebody game from Bally. One its unique features is a small "flipsave" flipper which activates after hitting a specific sequence of targets. This small flipper lives inside the right-most lane and can be used to flip the ball back into play before it gets lost permanently into the drain.

Big Game
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 1980 (Solid State)
Design By: Harry Williams
Art By: Gerry Simkus and Doug Watson
Owned by Pinball Outreach Project, on location at Ronald McDonald House East in Portland

Big Game was the first of five widebody pinball machines produced by Stern in their first incarnation. It was also the first game Stern produced with 7-digit scoring, allowing for scores up to 9,999,999. Big Game was one of the last games designed by Harry Williams, who founded Williams Electronic Games and designed over 150 games beginning in 1932. Once asked what makes pinball so popular, Williams responded "The ball is wild." This iconic phrase is still used today to define pinball's appeal.

Beat The Clock
Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1985 (Solid State)
Designed by George Christian
Art By: Tony Ramunni
On loan from the Portland Pinball Community

In this unusual game, players battle a timer rather than playing a set number of balls. This technique has been used on a few games, but only Beat The Clock has implemented it in a way that is popular with players.
